Idea for Kids this Summer: Learn Life Skills

One idea I have for my kids this summer is to learn life skills that they will need as they grow into adults. I have been thinking of how to structure my children’s time this summer. I am still looking for ideas on that, so let me know if you have any ideas.

Meanwhile, I remembered a wonderful book I read a few years ago that had a list of life skills. It’s called How to Raise an Adult: Break free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haim. In her book, she provides the ages when children can or should be able to do a variety of activities.

At the time, I put together a road map based on these activities, dismayed that my children were “behind”. Or, rather, I was behind on supporting them to develop these life skills.

With many camps and activities cancelled (or online) this summer, I revisited the list of life skills in the book and updated my road map. I suppose many parents are in the same situation as I am. Plus, helping kids become adults is what we are supposed to be doing as parents. So, I am sharing my Road Map of Life Skills.

It is a Google doc, so if you “make a copy” (under File), you will be able to edit your own copy. I like creating things and supporting people with leaving a positive legacy. It still takes time to create and publish. If this is helpful to you, please let me know. It’ll help me know that taking the time is worthwhile!
